Cruising like Han (You know, Solo)

Don’t you just hate it when you want to go somewhere, but there is no one to go with? Or maybe you just want to get away from everyone you know for a bit.

Many cruise lines are now offering solo rooms (or cabins, or staterooms, or studios, or whatever else you may want to call them) just for those moments. Because these rooms are designed for the solo cruiser, there is no single-supplement, like you would find when booking a traditional cabin for one person. Of course, these rooms will be smaller than standard rooms and depending on the cruise line and ship, the number of these can vary and are rather limited. Most of us know each cruise line has its target customer and therefore its own personality. We aren’t going to focus on the bigger picture, because today, it’s all about you.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian has seven ships designed for the solo traveler. The number of available cabins varies from 4 to 128 depending on the ship. In these rooms you will find a full-sized bed, flatscreen TV and private bathroom, all packed into these up-to-100-square-foot accommodations. Even though Norwegian’s solo rooms are only available as inside accommodations, some have windows that look out onto corridors. Two ships even offer rooms with virtual portholes that stream ocean views.

The huge perk of booking Norwegian’s single rooms is access to an exclusive, shared social space called the Studio Complex and Lounge. This common area with features large-screen TVs, coffee-making facilities, a bartender at certain times of the day and daily hosted pre-dinner gatherings.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean also has seven ships with 15 to 28 studios available, depending on the ship. With Royal Caribbean, on five of their ships, you have the option to choose virtual balcony (inside) cabins and solo balcony rooms. Studio units all come with full-size beds and range in size from 101 to 119 square feet. The other two ship offer two categories of solo cabins (inside rooms and outside rooms, though none with virtual or true balconies) that are a bit smaller, starting at 96 square feet.

From scuba training in the pool and group fitness activities to wine-tasting demonstrations and cooking classes, solo cruisers can easily keep themselves entertained. With so many options, it’s easy for solo cruisers to socialize and have just as much fun at sea as couples and groups

Virgin Voyages

The newest kid on the block is Virgin Voyages. They currently offer single sailors the option of Solo Insider and Solo Sea View Cabins. Positioning itself as a hip anti-cruise line, all three of their ships offer 46 cabins for single passengers, 40 of which are insides and six of which provide rare forward-facing views of the sea. At 100 square feet, these Solo Insider and Sea View rooms are cleverly appointed with full-sized beds and sleek, stylish furniture, décor, and bathrooms.

The vibe on Virgin Voyages is very open and excepting to all. There are several events just for the solo cruiser as well as a number of options open to all onboard. A few of these that serve alcohol, do have a small fee. A bonus perk on this cruise line is you won’t find anyone under 18 anywhere.

Celebrity

You can find their Infinite Veranda solo rooms on just three of their ships. The number of available rooms varies between 16 and 32. These cabins offer the solo sailor a bit more room at 131 square feet. Unlike traditional balconies, Infinite Verandas extend the overall square footage of the cabin, featuring a window that raises and lowers with the push of a button.

Holland America Line

Holland America delved into the studio concept on three ships by adding 12 rooms on each. They all feature ocean views and anywhere from 127 to 172 square feet of space, as well as single-bed configurations and the same general furniture and amenities as most other cabins.

Solo travelers can enjoy activities like mixers, cocktail parties, games, exercise classes, line dance classes, wine tasting and cooking demonstrations, Team Trivia contests, sports challenges and more.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises has four ships with solo inside rooms for one. These are all inside cabins with a single bed and roughly 129 square feet of space.
